What is “Custom Leatherwork”

Custom Leatherwork (kəstəmˈ leT͟Hərˌwərk) “The art of actualizing unique one-of-a-kind creations out of leather to a client’s particular designs or wishes. Also known in certain circles as bespoke”. That is my definition of actual high end serious custom leatherwork. When you start your search for a specialized truly custom leathersmith it’s going to be hard, prepare yourself. There are many leathersmiths and leather companies on the internet. Some bad, some good and some really really good. Unfortunately, due to the way the web works, it’s not always the really good ones that come up at the top of the internet search engines. Many leathersmiths...

Five Chef’s receive Dragonthorn Leatherworks Chef Knife Roll-Ups as a Thank You from Snake River Grill, Jackson Hole, WY

If any of you reading this are leathersmiths you can imagine the surprise in receiving a phone call asking for 7 custom chef’s knife rolls to be constructed and delivered in four weeks. Now, I am good but I do take my time. Four weeks? Done! Long days and nights in the shop but we pulled it off. The Snake River Grill in Jackson Hole, Wyoming had a 20th anniversary on June 11th and invited 5 chefs that had started out at the grill back for a celebration. I’ve been to Jackson Hole (used to be a big downhill skier in my younger days) but I’ve never been to Snake River Grill.  Must admit though that from dealing with Jeff Drew, head chef, and in looking at the pics and menu...

Nice review up on the fountain pen network…

Recently finished a custom hard-shell single pen case for a customer in Canada. I actually impressed even myself on this one. For all of you that are working on getting better at custom leatherwork, never think it can’t be done … just keep trying different things out until you determine “how” to get it done (also helps to have been working with leather for a couple of decades but heh, somebody’s got to do it)!!  Check out the review here. ...

New equipment has arrived!

If you’ve had the time to read through my website you’ll note that I have done most of my sewing in past with a Tippman Boss Saddle Stitcher (see pic). Been a great machine. Its a bit different though as it lays down a stitch everytime you pull the handle. Takes time to stitch belts, guitar straps and etc. but does not use electricity and is very very accurate. This sucker will also punch through up to 3/4″ of leather or just about any other material (including fingers). After using this daily for 11 years I finally bit the bullet and got hold of a Techsew 2700 light/medium “ELECTRIC” Industrial Sewing Machine. Wow! another learning curve (see another pic). So, as you...

How to nail a knife’s dimensions when you do not have the knife in hand

Many of you that are looking at my webpage in order to gain ideas for a sheath for your high end knife probably get a bit worried about “mailing me the knife”. Completely understood I assure you. For any custom sheath maker the easiest method to creating your ultimate sheath is have your knife in hand. Some situations make that a bit difficult however. A prime example would be a project I am working on currently. The gentleman is in Afghanistan at the moment (7,300 miles away) so shipping a knife that distance, not to mention that in Afghanistan he probably needs it daily, can be difficult. What I do is to create a scale drawing of the knife based on information gleaned...
