Kydex and Sheepskin Lined Sheath

Kydex and Sheepskin Lined Sheath, …say what? I know, here I go again. I was contacted by a customer in California that had just purchased a Busse Combat Sarge 7. Now, as this is a $400.00 plus dollar knife the customer wanted a really nice piece of leather to show it off with, plus a way to keep it very well protected. Hence a combination leather, kydex and sheepskined lined piece of work.

The outer leather shell of the sheath is constructed of 4-5 oz. Horsehide that has been dyed a medium cognac brown and is finished with Atom Wax. There is an attached loop for a Swedish Firesteel Army model. The belt loop is designed for a high hip carry on the right side or can be used for a left side cross draw. The edges have been hand burnished to a very high polish. Inside the sheath is a 2mm Kydex shell that is lined with sheep skin. The sheepskin is impregnated with renwax to condition the blade as drawn and to allow for a completely silent draw. The Kydex has been molded to create an indent at the base of the knife handle to firmly hold the knife in place. Simple huh. Nope, complicated to make but beautiful in its execution. This kydex lining design can be created for any sheath knife. The indent in the kydex to secure the knife tighter in the sheath totally depends on the knife design itself. However, many forms of attachment can be had so don’t feel left out if an indent wont work with your particular blade. This sheath model starts at $250.00 and goes up from there. Leather Knife Sleeve for Hartsook Talon2©

Custom Leather Knife Sleeve developed specifically for the Hartsook Talon2©. This sheath was modified and developed for a knife maker friend of mine, Doug Hartsook. Doug is a phenomenal knife maker and his work has come a long way from his days making knives in shop in high school. I have done quite a few sheaths for Doug’s knives and you will find them featured as we move forward with this website.

As the Talon2© is only 4.5″ long, this sheath lends itself to an easy belt carry. This particular sheath is fitted with a titanium clip that is unfortunately no longer available (I am in process of developing a Dragonthorn Leatherworks custom titanium clip to replace it). In the meantime I can fit a standard belt holster spring clip and cover it in leather if preferred. As well, I can design and build this sheath for a horizontal carry vs. a vertical one as in the original design. This sheath is made out of 3-4oz. black oil tanned leather and the top is covered with Iguana hide. The edges are well burnished to a high shine and complement the sheath and knife very well. Variations to this leather sheath/sleeve are too numerous to mention here. Suffice to say, any combination of leather type, color and lining are available. Base price for his sheath is $125.00. DH

Leather Slip Knife Sheath with snap for Hartsook Skinner©

This leather slip knife sheath with a snap for Doug Hartsook’s Skinner© is a nice piece of work!, even if I do say so myself. The knife obviously speaks for itself. The sheath is another matter entirely. Allow me this opportunity to introduce Buck Early, sheath designer. Buck’s my best friend and we met through our love for knives. I will be featuring a few of Bucks designs as this webpage moves forward. Needless to say, the man has a brain for sheath design. This piece is made of 5-6oz. oil tanned brown leather and is lined with a butterscotch suede. I have perfected a technique whereby the lining does not need to be stitched to the outer shell in order to stay secure. How do I do it? Trade secret. Obviously its glued, question is how do I get the suede edges to burnish properly… dragon spit. The uniqueness of this sheath is created by the design of the knife. The forefinger cutout on the knife makes for a very interesting location to place the leather flap w/ snap to hold the knife in the sheath. In this main photo you can see the care that we placed on the burnishing of the edges. To me, edges are everything. Anyone can cut leather, few can burnish to this level (heh, I’m trying to sell knife sheaths here). The point of showing you so many different knife sheaths is to give you some innovative concepts to think on. When you purchase and collect handmade knives you need sheaths that lend themselves to the design of the knife itself. This particular sheath does that very well I think. Base price for this sheath is $140.00. The lining is an additional $30.00. Any color of leather and lining can be had. Let me know. DH

Multi Tool Belt Pouch

Multi-tools are one of the coolest things that have been invented to go on your belt. Small, relatively light weight and more gadgets than most tool boxes have. Of course, you require a multi tool belt pouch to carry it properly. This project was yet another interesting one. I received an email from a women in Zambia (yes, Zambia) who wanted something special for her husband on their wedding anniversary. Her husband works at a golf course in Solwezi, Zambia and uses his Leatherman multi-tool daily. She wanted a custom pouch for the leatherman, with her husbands name carved into the front and a quote carved into the back. I took it a step further and carved his signature on the front flap.

Pouches can be difficult to get right but this one turned out very well I think. Fits the Leatherman perfectly The belt loop is large enough to accommodate a belt up to 1.5″. This item is made out of 3-4oz. tooling leather and dyed black using an oil based professional dye. Simple snap on the front which is reinforced for consistent use. You will note my standard highly burnished and polished edges. The base price for this item is $150.00. Carving names, signatures and etc. is additional. Obviously I’ll ship anywhere but make sure that you read the “order” section so you understand how I work with shipping. As this is custom I guarantee I can make this fit anything.
