SOLD! But I can always make more. This Leather Wrist Brace was made for a customer that pretty much beats his pharmaceutical braces to death. As I understand it he goes through one of the fabric braces monthly. Whether just beating it up or “setting it on fire” as he says while welding his custom drag cars, they just don’t last nor support his damaged wrist properly. Apparently other leathersmiths he has contacted to create this stated “it can’t be done”. We’ll, yes it can…see? “Bruzer”, as he is called. contacted me a while back with this request and was kind enough to mail me an old brace that I could use both as a pattern and for internal parts for the new one. This leather wrist brace is made out of 5-6oz. oil tanned leather with a 1/8″ piece of foam sandwiched between the oil tanned outer shell and the suede lining. I can as well make this item out of Horween leather however the price will increase based on the cost of Horween leather at that time. The buckles are nickel plated while the straps are all riveted with nickel rivets for both strength and panache. This item is a prototype as I needed to construct it and get it to the customer for testing and suggestions for giving him a better fit. Think about it, if you have to wear something like this all day you definitely want to make sure that it fits perfectly. The final brace will be in the $250.00 – $300.00 range and note that larger braces for larger wrists will require more leather as well as increased cost for the use of Horween leather if you prefer. I’ve tried this on (my arm in the pic) and I assure you that your wrist will not move with this baby on. Next step is to create a “dress brace” for those times when he’s out and about on the town… hmmm, where could I go with that?! DH

If you’re going to carry a Butterfly Knife you really should carry it in something like this. 4-5oz. tooling leather, saturated with neatsfoot oil to keep it supple and protected. The clip is a spring steel holster clip covered in leather. I made this one for a gentlemen in South Florida that likes to jog. He needed it as slim as possible for concealment and designed not to fall out of his pocket or off of his jogging shorts. He also requested that I carve a logo of his choosing into the front side. Base price for this sheath is $135.00 w/o the leather covered clip. I’ll cover it like this for an additional $25.00. As always as it’s custom, any color, leather or additional tweaks are available. Just let me know and I’ll figure it out. DH

Just finished, a mini tablet portfolio! This piece was designed for a customer in Virginia to hold an iPad Mini, a Moleskine Cahier notebook, an iPhone 5, assorted pens/pencils, reading glasses, and s small set of business cards. In addition it has a gusseted flap on the back to hold up to 3 loaded letter size file folders. All of this an its only 1″ thick! (depending on just how you stuff it of course). The design elements are similar to the “Ultimate iPad Case” by Dragonthorn Leathersworks which includes top quality leather, sueded lining and no extras to increase its bulk. This particular case is made of 3-4oz. oil tanned leather with orange stitching (nice touch I think). The mini-tablet fits in a pouch on the front of the case with he Moleskine Cahier notebook beside it. The cellphone (iPhone 5), pens, glasses and business cards are all in a removable sleeve in a pouch behind the tablet and notebook. The pouch on the back of the portfolio is fully gusseted and will hold up to .5″ of file folders and papers. I finished the edges a bit differently on this one. Oil tanned leather does not hold a burnish very well so I located some very high quality Italian Edge paint to finish it off. As info, Italian edge paint is the product used on most very high end bags, purses, and wallets and such. As these pieces are fully custom designed and built they can be made in any configuration to fit any size tablet by any manufacturer and can carry any selection of items. The base price for this portfolio as shown is $330.00. Let me know if you have any other ideas for items you’d like to carry along with your mini or 7″ tablet. DH

ByDave Hauser

Custom Stingray Wallet you ask? Coming right up, err…. in a short bit… I have worked with a lot of tough leathers and difficult projects but I have to say finishing this wallet for a recent customer strained the both of us. The design and the manufacture of the pure cow leather bits was not difficult. Determining exactly how I was going to stitch this baby was not. Stingray skin is actually made up of a hard calcareous material that is more like armor than skin or scales. A regular knife will not easily cut it, nor are your scissors happy if you use them. I ended up using a pair of shop shears for the rough cut and my belt sander to get the edges straight. The tough part is physically in the stitching. Because of the calcareous material on the skin being formed as small beads of various sizes, a professional sewing machine needle will not stitch through the skin in a straight line as the needle wants to move around the bumps into an area the needle can penetrate. Most Stingray wallets are made from juvenile rays where the “bumps” as we call them are very small and easier to sew. The skin I was provided by the customer had a variety of “bump” sizes that are actually much more intriguing than the smaller rays but much tougher to work with. I finally decided to utilize my dremel skills to cut groves in the skin with a cutoff disc for the straight stitch lines and a diamond point tip to cut the radius grooves in the corners. Even then you have to be careful as the needle still wants to wander (I guess all of that miniature model making when I was younger paid off).

The customer had many card wallets in the past that just simply wore out after a period of time. He came up with some basic design ideas and I worked from those. This wallet has three pockets (two on the outside front and a gusseted one in the center). An additional request from the customer was that this wallet needed to hold 6-8 cards, hence the gusset, drivers license and cash. Further it needed to have a leather covered clip to secure to his pocket and a pen loop for a small fountain pen. Three busted needles and a broken cutoff disc later we have the wallet in the photos. The base price for this wallet is $140.00 and that’s with you supplying the Stingray. There are so many different types and grades of Ray on the market that it would be tough to give an accurate estimate if I included the hide in the price. DH
