Simply put, I do custom leather work. Custom leatherwork is a bit different. It’s not ground out by a bunch of people getting paid low wages in a factory, nor is it something that you can click on and add to your shopping cart. It’s, in a word, special. Custom leatherwork is an art. Imagine taking an idea, raw leather hide, thread and creating something that no one else has. Custom leatherwork is very personal. Why?, well, it was dreamed up by you and made by me for you. No one else has anything exactly like it. Even if I make two pieces of the same thing, its all different. Each hide of leather is different as is each location on the hide itself. The leather I use has, in most cases, what we in the business call “Range marks”; locations on the hide where the cow has rubbed up against something, snagged itself on barbed wire or done something that ends up giving the leather character. (Check out the website to learn a bit more about possibilities) Even if dyed, each piece of leather colors differently as it is exposed to the elements and sunlight. I know each of you has seen a really nice looking leather bag or satchel that looks like it has not only been around the world but also has that patina that lets you know its different.
My work is just that, different. I have an extreme attention to detail. If I make a piece and it’s not right I make it again until it is. I have been told that my edges are “wonders to behold” and let me tell you, it’s a pain to get them that way but I take pride in it. I both hand stitch and use a Tipmann Saddle stitcher. Why not hand stitch everything? Well, if you’ve ever hand stitched leather you’ll know. The Tipmann lays down one stitch at a time based on every physical pull of the handle and allows me to stitch up to 3/4″ leather layers (try that by hand).
I’ve made a little bit of everything. Holsters, knife sheaths, cell phone cases, wallets, handbags, wine glass lanyard, slings, notebook covers, guitar straps, belts, knife roll-ups for chefs, document holders for classic and collector cars, repaired antique luggage, key-chain fobs and pipe bags to name a few. If it’s made out of leather I can probably do it. The most joy I take is taking someones idea and expanding on it. I take great pride in taking your idea and building it for you. You may have seen something around, in a store, on the internet and you say to yourself, man, if that only did this or had that it would be perfect. Well … it can be …
Your challenge is this. Lets talk about something you’d really like to have and see what we can do. DH
