Wow, what a long way we’ve come. I started being serious about this business about 15 years ago and got burnt out quick. At the time I was operating out of my garage and a very small room in my basement. My webpage ranking went from page 9,000 something to page one in 6 months. More orders than I had the equipment to handle. I stopped for a while, moved and now have a full shop to work out of. It’s  a major difference working out of a garage in the winter with a jet heater blasting your ears out to a full sized 20 x 35 foot shop with “real” walls, central heat and air and carpet. Racks for supplies, two workbenches for tools and two tables for layout, cutting and dyeing… life is good. Have to say that my Bose sound system helps out a good bit. I work on leather and listen to music all day, blues mainly but I do like a bit of everything. I now have two sewing machines (big difference), various tools (the inventory keeps growing) and a fairly good stock of leather and such at most times.

Well, the reason for this post is to say “Thank You” to all of my customers. I built a new website and started back at page 9,000 something on the internet. Have now climbed back up to between pages 1 and 4 on most search terms and it is my customers that have helped get me back at the top. I don’t plan on going anywhere this time so keep an eye out for new projects and ideas from Dragonthorn Leatherworks. Well, back to the shop… Muddy Waters here I come…  DH

Raw leather hide prices have gone up again gang. Wish it was not true but it is what it is. I will try and hold my prices where I can. For the larger items I will be making a few adjustments to the pricing over the next few weeks (spending more time in the shop and less on the computer). Many people may not realize that leather is no longer a raw material, it’s now a commodity. The differences in Domestic hides (Made in USA) vs. those made overseas (primarily Mexico) can be quite drastic. I may order my other supplies via the internet but I “always” hand select my leather hide by hide. I am very fortunate to have one of the better leather wholesalers about 1 hour from my home in Greensboro, NC so it does make it a bit easier to hand pick what I or my customers like. In some cases I can get very, very nice imported hides at a good price (a key to hand selecting). I would love to use only USA tanned hides but my prices would need to increase 50 – 60%. If you would like me to do a project for you and want only USA tanned hides just let me know and I’ll see what I can do.  DH

If you’ve had the time to read through my website you’ll note that I have done most of my sewing in past with a Tippman Boss Saddle Stitcher (see pic). Been a great machine. Its a bit different though as it lays down a stitch everytime you pull the handle. Takes time to stitch belts, guitar straps and etc. but does not use electricity and is very very accurate. This sucker will also punch through up to 3/4″ of leather or just about any other material (including fingers). After using this daily for 11 years I finally bit the bullet and got hold of a Techsew 2700 light/medium “ELECTRIC” Industrial Sewing Machine. Wow! another learning curve (see another pic). So, as you can see I am ramping up my efforts. Leather equipment can be very expensive but if your going to do it right you’ve got to do it with the right tools. With this new machine I plan on expanding my belt and guitar strap line and as well start diving into high end bags and cases. I was always very fond of leather stuff in old movies and feel that they had a certain elegance that is hard to find today. So…., I’ll make them for you (soon as I figure out the little knurled nob thingy on top of the other thingy thats attached to…. well, you get the picture).  DH

Well, time to jump into the 21st Century I suppose. I’ve spent a lot of time getting this website together (keeping it up is a whole different story). I have added an RSS feed to the site for those of you that would like to keep up with what I’m doing. To be honest, and its all good, my business and exposure has increased dramatically over the past few months. Nothing to win any awards but the words getting out. I will do my best to keep adding tidbits to the blog (leather related as best I can). Time to get better at balancing creating leather stuff with properly communicating about it. Till next time…  DH

In early November of this year (2012) my PCS design (Pocket Carry System) was reviewed by Julie Strietelmeier of The-Gadgeteer.com (you can read the review here). After a few days Julie and I got together and decided to run a contest for her readers PCS designs with the winners being awarded a full custom PCS, A lined PCS kit and an unlined PCS kit (contest here). We received quite a few excellent entries and the readers of Julie’s blog voted on and selected three that they thought should win. The contest entries and winners can be viewed on Julie’s website here. I have just finished the 1st place winners PCS and thought you might like to see his original design and the finished product. Joe and the Smith & Wesson SWHRT7T

Joe is the guy that I made the Smith & Wesson SWHRT7T sheath for. He’s currently stationed in the Middle-East and keeping things running for our troops.  I have to say that I’m even impressed that the knife fit the sheath perfectly (or the other way around). The technique that we use here at Dragonthorn Leatherworks to manufacture leather items without the “actual” item works pretty well. In this case, as I understand, it worked perfectly. According to Joe “Yes, the knife fit well. I feel much more safe with it in the extremely sturdy sheath, as it is so sharp it was dangerous to carry before.” Happy to help Joe. Stay safe man.  DH

For more pics of the sheath and the technique we use to manufacture leather items without having the item it holds in hand click here and here.

This portfolio contains examples of our work. Over the past years I have created so many different leather items that it would be difficult to list them all. You will note an “Older Work” menu item that contains simple pictures of various items that have been created in the past. I did this to allow new visitors and past customers to view many of the items that we had up on our old website. This “Portfolio” section will contain samples of our new work. You may either view the current work on this page or drill down a bit by using selecting the various categories form the drop down portfolio menu if you prefer. Knife by Hartsook.

Medium Box Pouch Main

Leather Pouch, perfect for strolling through the woods and carrying your favorite pipes and tobacco (or anything else that you may need to carry in a bit of style). This particular piece was created for a gentleman in Virginia that enjoys hiking in the great outdoors. I must admit I as well have enjoyed a good bowl of matured virginia while lounging on a mountain top. This particular bag is 7.5 inches wide from edge to edge with an inside width capacity of 7 inches. Height closed is 5 inches and the inside thickness is 2 inches. Holds two of my favorite Vermont made flame-grain free-hands, tobacco pouch, pipe cleaner case, Dunhill pipe lighter and a hand made (for me personally) Larsen horn pipe tamper. On a side note I used to travel quite extensively and found myself on numerous occasions in Copenhagen. Being a pipe smoker with some time on my hands one Saturday I looked up Ole’ Larsen’s pipe shop and decided to give it a shot. If you’d like to know more about the visit check out the blog post here.   OK, back to the bag description … The leather used is a drum dyed 4-5 oz. marbled brown with brown thread. This bag is lined with a dark brown pigskin to add a bit of flair. The edges are undyed but hand polished to a high sheen. This bag as well has two belt loops stitched to the back so that the owner can carry it on his belt while walking. This bag style can obviously be made in any dimension, any leather and any lining or not as you prefer. The bag shown as is carries a price of $150.00. Prices will vary based upon the size of the bag and the materials used.  DH

At one time I was an “over the top” pipe smoker and collector. My collection (still intact) sports a variety of high grade Italians (Castello’s, Ascorti’s, Camenetto’s), many Danish and American free-hands and a wealth of pipe smoking gadgets (knives, tampers, cases, etc.). I hate to admit that I’ve backed off a good bit as it is tough to work on leather with a pipe in your mouth.

Anyway, I used to travel internationally quite extensively for a steamship line (cargo, not people) and lived in Europe for three years. I visited Denmark quite often but never really had the time to sight-see until one weekend that I arrived early for a meeting. Actually stayed in an old KGB building that had been converted into a hotel (but that’s another story). I had a Saturday to kill so decided to look up W. O. Larsen’s Pipe Shop in Copenhagen. Sure enough, it actually existed. I’ve always been a fan of Ole’ Larsen’s Pipes and Tobacco so was quite excited at the prospect. I made my way and maneuvered in and out of some of the small streets in Copenhagen, turned a corner and I swear a light from heaven highlighted the door of the shop (I wish I had taken pictures but I was a bit weak in the knees). I walked in, and down stairs as a recall, and was immersed in what had to be the coolest Pipe Shop I’ve ever been in. Not large, very crowded with Ole’s wife standing behind the counter. I looked around and explained to Ole’s wife who I was and how I was connected (I knew quite a few high end pipe collectors, shop owners, pipe makers and the like back in the day). I really don’t think it would have made any difference. I cannot begin to explain just how open and warm she was.

She could see the excitement in my eyes and called out towards the back (in Danish obviously) and who should walk around the corner? Ole’ himself. I coulda just died. Behind Ole’ comes Nils! Doesn’t get any better than this I thought. Well, the afternoon rolls on. I am consuming gallons of Ole’s coffee and chatting up a storm with the three of them and customers as they arrive. It’s interesting, I’ve spent hours and hours in US pipe shops and enjoyed every minute but you just don’t see the varied international customers in US shops that you see in Denmark and Italy (Italy’s another story. Spent hours and hours in shops in Milan picking over top grade Castello’s at prices that would make you weep. Not to mention the Castello shop tour at Lake Como).

I eventually walked out late that night with a signed coffee table book on Danish pipes and pipe makers. Still have it though it’s in Danish. Don’t care, love the pictures and rubbing my fingers across Ole’ and Nils signatures. As well I now own a W.O. Larsen brandysnifter straight grain with a straight bamboo bit and a second Nils Larsen Horn pipe tamper designed by Nils and myself and made while I waited. Cost me a bloody fortune but wouldn’t trade them for anything.

God bless you Ole”!  DH
